- Virtual Local Area Network
- the ability to create logically independent and isolated LAN networks from a shared physical network by using switches and protocols that label or tag packets exchanged between switches with additional identifying information. For example, a shared building network could be partitioned into a VLAN for the Building Automation System and a separate VLAN for tenants giving each enhanced security and privacy. VLAN protocols include IEEE 802.1Q, Cisco ISL (Inter-Switch Link), and 3Com VLT (Virtual LAN Trunk).
